Neurology and Neuromuscular Care Center (NNCC) is a non-profit private practice clinic intended to care for children and adults with neuromuscular conditions, regardless of their insurance situation. There are several types of neuromuscular diseases; we specialize primarily in the following ones:
Duchenne/Becker Muscular Dystrophy (DBMD)
DMD and BMD are called dystrophinopathies. There is a wide range of severity, but usually, patients present at an early age with progressive muscle weakness, followed in most cases by loss of ambulation. Other organs like the heart and lungs are also affected, making it a complex disease. We are the first CureDuchenne Clinic in the country. With the support of CureDuchenne, we have seen patients with DBMD in a multidisciplinary environment, including neurology, cardiology, pulmonology, dietitian, and physical therapy.
Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA)
SMA is a genetic disease that causes progressive muscle atrophy and weakness, leaving patients with significant disabilities and limitations in life. SMA can affect children and adults of any age. SMA was added to the newborn screening in 2018. Currently, 95% of patients can be diagnosed and treated in the first months of life. These medications, called disease modifiers, are not cures. The patient needs to continue receiving the standard of care throughout their life. At NNCC, we have all the health care providers necessary to provide well-rounded and compassionate care.
Myasthenia Gravis (MG)
MG is an autoimmune disease that affects the junction between the nerve and the muscle. This disease can also affect children and adults of any age. The treatment is complex, requiring modulating or suppressing the immune response. For this reason, experience caring for MG patients is vital. We are recognized by the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America (MGFA) as Partners in MG Care (https://goo.by/ElU14).
Guillain- Barre Syndrome/ Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyradiculoneuropathy (GBS/CIDP)
GBS is an autoimmune disease that affects the myelin (nerve cover) or/and the axon of the nerves. Usually, GBS presents sub-acutely (1-2 weeks) at any age with progressive and ascending muscle weakness and sometimes numbness, tingling, and pain. Most patients will recover well and do not have any long-term sequelae. On the other hand, some patients continue having weakness or relapses throughout life, which require long-term medications. We are recognized as a Center of Excellence for the care of these patients by the GBS/CIDP Foundation International (https://goo.by/xPccy). Dr. Castro is part of the Medical Advisory Board of the foundation.
